In Małgorzata Mirga-Tas's first solo exhibition Jangare at the Foksal Gallery Foundation during Warsaw Gallery Weekend 2023, the artist returns to her visual roots. Although she owes her framework to monumental textiles - presented, among others, at the 59th Venice Biennale in the Polish Pavilion in 2022 - she began with sculpture. Mirga-Tas depicts five human figures and one animal, reminiscent of protective Roma totems. Cast in symbolic materials, wax and coal, they are conceived as a gestures which bring good luck, a good omen.
Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, a Polish artist of Roma origin, constantly refers to her own heritage using the language of art - a tool for reflection and transgression. Her works address the issue of anti-Roma stereotypes, building a new, affirmative iconography of Roma communities.
